1909 Hand Painted Shaker
Designing a kitchen that would work well for a busy family who loved to entertain was the challenge when creating this kitchen.
The client came to us with plans for an orangery extension and an open space to plan for. They have two young children in the house and knew they wanted soft furnishings within the space, as well as an extendable dining table that could be used to seat 10-15 people for special events throughout the year
John designed a round banquette seating area on the kitchen island which can be used daily for up to 6 people, or when needed it can be extended to seat up to 15 guests.
A breakfast pantry was incorporated to hide away a coffee machine and toaster to free up the main kitchen area on busy school mornings. Either side of this is a combi microwave and 45cm integrated wine cooler, conveniently located within reaching distance of the dining table. A bench seat was added next to this with a piano hinged top, which is a lovely place to enjoy a morning coffee and convenient for hiding the kid’s toys. Wooden pegs in the tongue and groove panelling are great for the kids to hang school bags or for chef’s aprons.
John designed an ornate canopy to house the extractor with shaker panelling above and two alcoves to place spices and oils. The shaker panels here blend nicely with the shaker wall panels which were created by the Elements workshop team and painted to match the charcoal blue of the island. These wall panels really help to tie the new orangery and existing space together.
For the flooring we used Amtico Spacia and John specified this to be laid in a herringbone pattern with a border around the cabinetry. This is a lovely finishing touch and frames the kitchen beautifully.
The client used their existing American fridge freezer which we surrounded with a pull-out larder for dry food and an oven tower with a single pyrolytic and full-size steam oven. Combined with the combi oven next to the breakfast pantry, this should be plenty of cooking space, even when entertaining for up to 15 guests! Next to this is an open oak framed bookcase. This was specified to be the same finish as the bench seat and internal of the breakfast pantry for a cohesive look.
